LETHAEOS – “Rapid fire” Interview

Hi, and welcome to Metal Maniack! Please tell us about your band and members history.

Hello ! Lethaeos was created in summer 2013 by Lucas Decarnin (Guitar), Thomas Barabino (Guitar) and our former drummer Alexandre Bracqbien. They called on me to sing just for a few pieces. I liked the style and the potential of the band made me decide to stay. Adeline Gérard immediately joined us as bassist. Together we composed a few songs and released a 2 tracks demo, “Enemies”. By 2015, we had enough material to release our first album but our drummer chose to leave us. Therefore we released our album with programmed drums because we were pressed for time and searching for a new drummer for this album would have greatly delayed us. “Pillar of hope” was born on April 29, 2016. And a new drummer named Ronan Le Bideau appeared and became a permanent member of the band. We are touring the album in France and Belgium since September 2016.

What do you think is your band main influences? How and at what age you got into metal?

The influences are very varied in the group. Lucas is very much influenced by old school/new school death and hardcore metal like While she sleeps, Stick to your guns or Bids in row. Thomas is more focused on new extreme and sophisticated metal waves like Djent. Adeline loves the world of slugde, doom and stoner, as I do. I would add the classics of death and black metal even if I look more into the revival of the genres like Deathspell Omega, Gorguts, Ulcerate, Hate Eternal or any other experimenting bands. Ronan is attracted by the hardcore scene, some classics like Pantera, Gojira, also by the world of Funkand Soul and he turns towards other musical worlds outside the metal.

I started listening to extreme metal about 14/15 years ago when I met a friend who was immersed in it for some time. It was in 2000. He plunged me into the world of black and death metal in all its forms. Then I came progressively to orient myself towards the classics and and other styles.

How about your band style. How you describe it for those who never listened to your band music?

We have a pure and hard death metal base. Thanks to our various influences, we included atmospheres from djent, groove and black metal. Some riffs are taken from the hardcore wave. That’s why we preferred to reduce our style to Death Hybrid. By the way I use different types of vocals because this is what our music requires.

Explain your band name and how you get it and tell us a little bit about your songs lyrics and messages.

Lethaeos is Lethee in Latin, the river separateing the physical world from the abstract world, in Greek mythology. It is also related to the torpor of sleep. Thomas found this name, connected to the lyrics I wrote that are based on the dream and its possibilities. I imagined a world beyond the lucid dream, a corridor to follow to a guard, the “Pillar of hope”, who helps you to pass on the other side. Some tracks of the album relate this adventure. Others revolve around the idea of the lucid dream and the worlds and capacities it generates. There is no message to pass. Just the tale of an adventure going beyond physical possibilities.

Tell us about your band live shows. Do you play often? How are your shows?

We launched the “Pillar of hope Tour part I” from September 2016 to February 2017. 12 dates in France and Belgium, 1 or 2 gigs per month. We will continue on the “Tour Part II” soon, until September or October 2017 with a dozen of dates.

People discover and appreciate our music. The feedbacks are really good and encouraging. There are ups and downs in our gigs. Not easy to get people moving sometimes but we discover a lot of curious people who cling to our sound and concept so it naturally pushes us forward.

What you can tell us about your country  metal scene in general, and heavy metal scene in particular?

I would say that the metal scene in France, in general, goes ahead and that the extreme metal scene is doing very well. We have great bands in many styles in France that offer unique music such as Gojira, Loudblast, Agressor, Seth, Blut Aus Nord, Deathspell Omega, Dagoba, The Lumberjack Feedback, Colossus, Netfastcore and which are exported all over the world . Forgive me for those I forgot. I also see lots of small bands emerging here and there and lasting long enough to rise to fame. It never stops. In Northern France, we have a few places like El Diablo in Lille, the Horloge in Boulogne-sur-mer and many others that give the possibility to these bands to evolve on stage. I have friends who play Death/Grind (Balance of terror), Progressive metal (Contrast), Sludge (Dunwich), Math (Science against spheric silence), Trash (Kaets), djent (Stengah) ,Post (LUDA). In France, there is something for all tastes and I personally enjoy all this thriving activity.

Describe your band releases so far. What reactions had media and audience about your music until now?

To this day, we have released a demo “Enemies” with 100 copies, sold out, and our first album “Pillar of hope” on April 29, 2016 in self-production. This album traveled around the world and the reactions were good ! We are very pleased with the work done by our guitarist Thomas for production, Simon Herbaut from the Imeremortal Studio and Oliver t’Servrancx from the Electric Box Studio for mixing and mastering, and finally Remy Headsplit Cooper for the artwork. We really wanted a quality product so that everyone could appreciate the concept, both musically and visually. We wanted a powerful, slightly aggressive and well-defined sound and that’s what we got. The media also appreciated the quality of the sound for a first draft and congratulated us. They enjoyed the various ambiances and the cohesion despite the large batch of riffs that were served for each piece. The ratings and reviews are more than good so it encourages us for the second album !

Please describe your band in few words for future fans or record labels that are interested in signing with your band.

Lethaeos is the alliance of multiple influences. Broad musical horizons are transcribed with vehemence and originality. The music, the lyrics, the visual are rallied to the same plan. The next picture will be even richer and furious.
